It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.
– Tony Robbins

Making a decision is not always easy, and most of times, whatever the final choice is, we have to give something up in order to get something else. And on top of that, we usually have a deadline too.
So, what is the best way to make a rational and optimal choice?

First Steps

First of all, it is very important to understand exactly what our needs are, so we should take some time to think carefully about what we want and write everything down.

Then, we need to figure out what our options are. And if this is not clear, it is vital to get to a set of options in order to make a decision, by pondering over it.
In this phase of the decisional process, it is important to make sure to have all the knowledge we need in order to make a good choice, by doing our research, looking for reliable information and asking for advice to professionals or people we trust.

The Decision Making of a Successful Individual

At this point, the following step is to compare the options that we have.
It is better to have a small set of alternatives – 3 to 5 alternatives would be fine, 2 even better- this way the process will be smoother and more accurate. Let’s say for example that we need to rent a house and we have to choose among a number of options, it would be really hard to make a decision considering 8 houses, while it would be much easier to have 2 or 3 options.
Ok but, how to choose among the options?

Firstly, we have to ask ourselves if there is something we really need and can’t give up, for example a large kitchen with a big window on the backyard and a basement. If we find these characteristics only in one alternative, the decision would be quick- we would choose the option with the characteristics we can’t turn down.
Instead, if we can consider all the options at the same level, we need to write down all the pros and cons for each of them. After this, there is only one step left, which is the easiest one: counting the pros and cons for each alternative.

The Choice

At this point, the best choice will come out automatically, and it will be the option with the highest number of pros and the lowest number of cons.
In case of a tie, the best thing to do is compare the cons of the alternatives and consider the elements that we think are unacceptable. This way, we would make a decision by excluding the less suitable choice.

To Sum Up…

1. Understand our needs
2. Prioritize our needs
3. Figure out the possible options
3. Search information and get to the final set of options
4. Is there something we can’t give up?
5. Pros vs Cons
6. Compare the Cons
7. Decision made – Mission accomplished

When you wake up every day, you have two choices. You can either be positive or negative; an optimist or a pessimist. I choose to be an optimist. It’s all a matter of perspective.
